Orihuela divides into the old town, which is inland, and Orihuela Costa on, yes you’ve guessed it, the coast.
Orihuela is a small city/largish town around 20 kilometres inland of the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante, Spain, on the River Segura.
It lies at the foot of the Sierra de Orihuela mountains and enjoys up to 320 days of sun a year. It’s a traditional and attractive Spanish town with a population of around 35,000. There are squares with fountains, a weekly market and bars and restaurants aplenty. The economy is traditionally based around agriculture, especially olives, almonds, lemons, oranges and pomegranates, and many buyers look for villas for sale in Orihuela’s surrounding countryside and satellite villages.
The lively university town of Murcia is barely a 30-minute drive one way and the interesting town of Elche 30 minutes the other way, with good public transport links to either of those, as well as Alicante and Murcia Airports.
Weather in both Orihuela the town and costa is pleasant year-round and typical for the Costa Blanca. With the mountains on one side and the Med on the other, Orihuela enjoys a cool breeze in summer and is protected from the harsh north winds in winter. The average temperature is over 20°C all year, but of course with highs in the mid-30s in summer and the occasional frost in the mountains in winter.
Residents of Orihuela are accustomed to golfing and there are three resorts in VIllamartin, Campoamor and Las Ramblas. The Orihuela coast is home to several Blue Flag beaches, which meet the highest standards for upkeep and sustainability.
Property for sale in Orihuela the town could include apartments and townhouses within the town, ranging from €50,000, but also country properties and fincas nearby from under €100,000 for a property needing completely refurbishing. Budget for €500,000-plus for the best villas with pools and views out to the Mediterranean.
Orihuela Costa, on the other hand, is a tourist area encompassing several coastal resorts including Punta Prima, Cabo Roig, Playa Flamenca, Villamartín and La Zenia to name a few.
Property in Orihuela Costa is mostly represented by new builds – houses and terraced homes, bungalows, apartments and villas, often on large developments set around communal pools. The pricing of these homes varies dramatically, from around €80,000 upwards. Then again, you can easily spend a million or two on a gorgeous villa with mountain and sea views, or on a golf course such as the sensational Las Colinas Golf.
