Firstly, let’s talk about the city. Málaga is the birthplace of Picasso and has a museum dedicated to the world’s greatest 20th century artist. It’s a city on the waterfront, with a busy port but also beautiful promenade and gardens. Behind that are narrow alleyways offering a welcome cool from the sun, and the perfect place for a bar crawl late into the evening. There are wide shopping streets with both the popular brands and upmarket names too.
Málaga has become a popular weekend break destination, with just enough ancient monuments – the Picasso Museum, the Alcazaba fortress, and the Roman theatre – and quirky areas (such as the English cemetery – nicer than it sounds!) and the beach.
You need never get bored with your own property in the city of Málaga. There will be potential for rental returns too (do check it’s legal though).
The wider province of Málaga has been popular among people looking to buy property in Spain for over 50 years. We all know the names of the resorts, from Marbella to Torremolinos, but try not to pack your preconceptions into the overhead locker with the rest of your stuff. Málaga offers real quality of life. Sunny weather – indeed, at 3,000+hours per year twice that of middle England – is a given on the Costa del Sol. But, avoiding the heat of day in high-summer, Málaga is an ideal place for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and golfing. The region is the epitome of Andalusia with gastronomy to match (although the bartenders have been a little less generous with tapas since the tourists arrived…).
Property for sale in Málaga includes apartments on lively beaches and cool city courtyards. There are villas for sale in Málaga just inland, as well as a huge choice of rural properties out in the countryside (‘campo’).
Prices are anything from a few tens of thousands for an apartment in a less salubrious block, to tens of millions for a house in the hills. Most buyers, on almost any budget, can find their place in the sun in Málaga. Whether you want to be close to the city's vibrant nightlife or prefer a more peaceful and secluded location, Málaga has something for everyone.
A major advantage to buying property in Málaga is its excellent transport links. Depending on their attitude to CO2, your friends or family can easily fly down here and back for a long lunch. And not just to the UK. Málaga is well-connected to other cities in Spain and Europe, with its international airport serving over 19 million passengers annually.
The city has a modern metro system too, so you can depart the airport and be whisked off to Fuengirola in minutes – avoiding the hassle of queueing for car hire. And that’s not to be sniffed at, if your property in Málaga lacks parking.
