Fancy living in the middle of the Atlantic? Known to many as the ‘Hawaii of Europe,” the Azores is an archipelago halfway between the USA and Portugal. Essentially a mountain range that arose from the North Atlantic Ocean, the islands enjoy a sub-tropical climate and volcanic activity.
The Azores is made up of nine major islands – Corvos, Faial, Flores, Graciosa, Santa Maria, São Miguel, São Jorge, Terceira – which are pleasant all year-round. Due to their location on the Gulf Stream, the islands have challenging winters as they’re exposed to the sea’s storms. However, one can enjoy the Azores’ subtropical climate with mild sea air and ocean breezes all year long. Temperatures in the summer typically reach 24°C, rarely dropping below 22°C.
The islands were discovered in the early 15th century by Portuguese navigators and has since experienced a long, rich history. The archipelago has experienced war, natural disasters and revolutions, which have changed its appearance over time. There are multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Azores. They include the Historical Centre of Angra do Heroismo on the island of Terceira and the Landscape of Pico Island Vineyard Culture on Pico Island.
Pico island contains spectacular evidence of grape growing for wine production and is made up of spaced out, long, linear walls that run inland and parallel to the rocky shores. It’s believed the walls were built to protect the thousands of plots from wind and seawater. It’s an extraordinary landscape that dates back to the 15th century.
The Azores attract tourists from all over the world year after year and therefore tourism is always present. The islands don’t provide the secluded lifestyle you might expect, instead locals there enjoy a quaint, laid-back life in a unique location.
There is so much to do in the Azores, you could never be bored. The weather alone keeps you on your toes. It’s been reported that the islands have experienced what feels like all four seasons in just 24 hours before! There are plenty of options for adrenaline junkies, given the many canyons around the islands and cliffs, waiting to be climbed. You can also enjoy hiking, canoeing, rappelling and walking on the many trails with landscapes like you’ve never seen before.
The islands have lush green forests, rolling mountains and rocky coastlines. Many local to the Azores also enjoy whale and dolphin-watching as there are many sea creatures that call the Azore waters their home. Depending on the time of year, you can sometimes even see larger whales in pods migrating to the islands.
When it comes to properties in the Azores, there’s a surprisingly large variety of home styles available. If you’re looking for land to build on, there’s an abundance of plots for sale, where you could build your very own dream home and enjoy the surrounding beautiful landscapes. There are one-bedroom homes available for as little as €150,000 and at the other end of the spectrum there are multi-million-euro designer villas at high vistas, which allow them to benefit from the stunning landscapes of the Azores.
