Pays de la Loire literally translates as Loire country, which couldn’t be more apt as the region is split in two by the Loire River, the longest river in France.
The Loire River gives its name to five other departments, which explains for the common confusion between Pays de la Loire and Loire Valley. The latter is a UNESCO valley in the middle stretch of the river in both the Pays de la Loire and Centre-Val de Loire regions.
Pays de la Loire is home to some popular expat areas which include Angers, Saumur, Nantes, Mayenne and Le Mans. The western France region borders the Atlantic, home to beautiful beaches in resort departments Vendée and Loire-Atlantique.
Like lots of French towns, the Pays de la Loire is seeped in history. Two famous castles in the region include Chateau de Brissac and Chateau Plessis-Bourre in the south.
Pays de la Loire has a pleasant climate for the majority of the year. Spring and autumn are relatively mild while summers are hot and sweet. The region is well located for a trip to the beach, as the west of the region borders the Atlantic Ocean.
Alongside blissful beaches, the region is home to Nantes, France’s sixth biggest city and university town with a famous gothic cathedral. Properties in Nantes are favoured for their resort-style appeal and proximity to the beach. Property prices are typically higher towards the coast where villas and large, detached homes are most popular, but new build properties further inland are available from €240,000.
For a long time, Loire Atlantique department has been where wealthy Parisians choose to summer, hence it has the most expensive property prices in the region. Buyers are tempted by the beautiful coastline, Pornic fishing port and its cosmopolitan cities.
Mayenne is another popular area in Pays de la Loire. Homes in Mayenne are typically more affordable and its villages are full of character. IF you’re after the true ‘French village experience, look no further. The medieval villages of Saint-Suzanne Chailland and Saulges offer affordability and small-town charm.
The region is well connected both within France and internationally. Nantes Airport has direct flights to and from the UK for as little as £XX and there are TGV trains running between Nantes and Paris in just under two and a half hours.
Properties in Pays de la Loire are the cheapest in the south. Homes there start from €100,000 and are often in need of a revamp, but with a little work a house can become a home. A typical 3-bedroom house, ready to move into, in Pays de la Loire starts at €114,000. A great three-to-four-bedroom home with country views will cost in the region of €250,000 - €550,000.
