Some of note include Beynac et Cazenac, a charming village on the banks of the Dordogne River, Sare in the Pyrenees Atlantiques, Navarrenx, an ancient, fortified village and Collonges la Rouge, a Limousin village with famously reddish buildings. Another delightful village popular with expats is Monflaquin, a bastide town dating back to the Hundred Year War in Lot-et-Garonne.
