One of the six districts of Cyprus, Famagusta can be found in the eastern coast of Cyprus. Since 1974, the Republic of Cyprus controls only the southeast section, which encompasses the four following areas: Ayia Napa, Paralimni, Derynia and Sotira. The district is served by Larnaca International Airport.
Famagusta boasts of 320 days of sunshine a year. July and August are the warmest months with an average daily maximum of 34°C. But even January, the coldest month, sees highs of 16 degrees. Plus, you’ll be able to swim comfortably for most of the year.
When it comes to buying property in the district of Famagusta, there are fantastic areas to choose from. If what you’re after is long days on the beach and nights spent dancing, you might want to base your property search in Ayia Napa. It is home to 13 Blue Flag beaches, including Nissi with its pristine white sands, DJs and partygoers. Meanwhile, once a village, Paralimni has rapidly developed in recent years, while retaining its old-fashioned charm. As it is slightly removed from the coast, property tends to be on the more affordable side. A large village, Derynia, offers a Cyprus with an authentic side. It is not far from the now-abandoned city of Famagusta, which some might find depressing to be close to. However, Derynia is celebrated for its strawberry growing, it is one of the Kokkinochoria (villages famous for their red soil). Sotira village is another Kokkinochoria. It is famous for its produce of watermelons, figs and pomegranates, which are celebrated in the Kolokasi Festival.
Struggling to decide where to buy in Famagusta? None of these locations are too far from each other. If the quiet of Sotira sounds like you on a day-to-day basis but you like the idea of a fun beach day in Ayia Napa, you need only hop in your car for 15-minutes to get there.
