It may not be as well-known as Málaga or Barcelona, but the city, region and coast of Murcia could soon be. Murcia is one of the Spain’s 17 autonomous regions, nestling between Andalusia and Valencia on Spain’s south-east coast. Its coast – the Costa Cálida – stretches for around 170 kilometres between the southern Costa Blanca and the Costa Almería. It includes the Mar Menor – ‘little sea’ – a warm lagoon that’s perfect for children’s holidays.
As new property buying hotspots go, Murcia is very hot, and that goes for the climate too. When you buy a property for sale in Murcia, make sure it is either close to the beach or a pool, or has air conditioning. The average daytime high in summer is mid-30s Celsius, and even in winter average highs are similar to a British summer’s day. It does get frosty occasionally on winter nights, but average rainfall is around half of, for example, Birmingham.
At around 11,000 square kilometres Murcia is one of Spain’s smaller regions, but that still makes it almost the size of Yorkshire, roughly the size of East Anglia. As well as a beautiful coast, there is property for sale in Murcia in the hills, mountains and plains. The countryside can be somewhat arid in summer, but there are pine forests on mountains that stretch to 2,000 metres, with vineyards and orchards in the foothills. Indeed it’s been nicknamed “Europe’s Orchard”.
A third of the region is at an altitude of over 600metres, so no wonder it has become an adventure sports hub. It’s popular for climbing, hiking and mountain biking, as well as the traditional seaside fun of sailing, windsurfing and swimming. The resort of La Manga is the most well-known resort, with villas, apartments, pools, tennis courts, golf courses and hotels spread over 1,400 acres with a private beach.
Other options for properties to buy in Murcia region include the seaside towns of Águilas and Mazarron, or the ancient naval city of Cartagena. Then there is the eponymous city. It’s a university city of close to half a million people, set on the Segura River. Although a Moorish city originally, architecturally it has some wonderful Baroque buildings.
Buy a holiday home in Murcia and you have a few options for airports. The official Murcia International Airport is at Corvera, in the centre of the region and handy for coast, city or interior. However you also have the option of Alicante airport.
