Fuerteventura rose up out of the Atlantic Ocean as a volcano about 22 million years ago. Over recent millennia winds have blown sand from the Sahara just a couple of hundred miles away, to create its trademark sand dunes, while the island is relatively flat compared to the other Canaries.

It’s been a biosphere reserve since 2009, notable for almost a complete lack of trees. However, the island is surrounded by dunes, crystal-clear lagoons and solitary beaches.

The island belongs to the Province of Las Palmas and its name comes from the Spanish words for strong and fortune, but often translated as strong wind. Indeed, wind and water sports are two of its biggest draws.

Local delicacies in Fuerteventura include prestigious, award-winning cheeses, limpets, frangollo (a sweet dessert) and goat meat. In fact, the island is known for its goat stews which are typically tasty and tender.

Divided into six municipalities, the island is long and narrow and around 100 kilometres north to south. It boasts the longest white-sand beaches in The Canary Islands.

The island’s population is around 100,000, some 20% of whom are from outside Spain. The biggest resort town is Corralejo in the far north, with popular resorts also down the more sheltered east coast, such as the Costa de Antigua. The capital and largest city is Puerto del Rosario, also on the north-east coast.

Weather in Fuerteventura is typically warm, and the island enjoys over 2,800 hours of sunshine per year, which when compared with London (1,400) and Glasgow (1,200) is rather impressive!
