Granada is a province in southern Spain, in the eastern part of Andalusia. Its capital city is also called Granada. It is bordered by some spectacular locations, including Albacete, Murcia, Almeria, Malaga, and the Costa Tropical. With a property in Granada, all these destinations could make for fabulous daytrips.
Granada has sealed its place on the world map because of Alhambra, a UNSECO world heritage site and a Spanish cultural site. It is one of the most famous examples of Islamic architecture worldwide. While this magnificent fortress might draw you into Granada, there’s so much more to fall in love with. In 2022, it was recognised as the most-budget friendly holiday destination in Europe, because of its vast offerings of low-priced or even free museums and sight-seeing attractions. Moreover, it was also highlighted for its affordable public transport, nightlife, and dinner options. Plus, beer is remarkably cheap at just over €2. So, with a property in Granada, you will be able to enjoy all the perks of this brilliant destination without breaking the bank.
Furthermore, the province includes the Sierra Nevada, which contains the highest point of continental Spain. As the Sierra Nevada is the most southernly skiing resort in Europe, it gives any property for sale in Granada appeal as both a winter and summer destination. Indeed, you could ski in the morning and go to the beach in the afternoon. Plus, Granada shares Sierra Nevada National Park with Almeria. Here, on a walk, you’ll get to encounter pine groves and mountain goats.
One popular area within striking distance of coast, mountain and the cultural highlights of Malaga and Granada, is the Alpujarras (la Alpujarra). This rural area in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada on the seaward side was made famous in the Driving Over Lemons books by ex-Genesis guitarist Chris Stewart.
Due to the Sierra Nevada, Granada is a little cooler than many parts of Andalusia. And an escape up a mountain means experiencing distinctly chiller temperatures to below. June through to September sees temperatures in the low to mid-20s, with July being the highest at 26ºC. January is the coldest month with a daily average maximum of 7ºC.
In the province of Granada, you can find a townhouse in a village with three bedrooms or more for as little as €50,000. While these properties come with a lot of rustic charm, they may require some work. If you would prefer for renovations to have already been done, then the starting prices shifts up, but there are still plenty of multi-bedroom homes to be found for under €200,000. For a more modern family villa with features such as a barbeque area, a swimming pool, an outside dining area, mountain and/or sea views, you will need a budget of at least €300,000. If you are looking for a one-to-two key-ready apartment, like those that dot the Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca, you aren’t going to find many options. But if you are after a lovely country villa close to nature, sight-seeing, and skiing, then take the plunge – one of these properties could be perfect.
