Porto lies on the Douro River in the northeast of Portugal where it meets the Atlantic coast. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in the 1990s for its historic city centre, which has remarkable universal value due to the large number of historical buildings.
As a city, Porto is relatively small. It measures just 41km2, which is less than half the size of Lisbon, Paris and Barcelona and less than one tenth the size of London. Its closest city by area is Lyon in France, which comes in at 48km2.

The city’s main attractions include Torre dos Clérigos, a 75-metre bell tower, Porto’s 12th-century cathedral and the Gothic Church of São Francisco.

Porto is most famously known for the fortified wine that it was named after. The port trade began in the late 17th century and was firmly established some 50 years later. The city has a high population density, similar to most European cities and is home to 1.3 million people.
The city itself has become somewhat of a tech hub for international tech start-ups, which has brought with it a wide variety of individuals to Porto. A sizeable number of the Porto population is engaged in the fisheries, manufacturing and tourism industries, which are the city’s main trades.
Porto is well-known for its Easter celebrations in March and April, the São João festival in June and NOS Primavera Sound – the biggest urban music festival in Porto.
