There’s a popular Portuguese rhyme about the city of Leiria: it has a river that flows uphill, a tower that does not have a cathedral, a cathedral that does not have a tower, and a High Street that is not straight. Intrigued?
Leiria was one of the first cities in Portugal to be occupied by the Moors back in the 10th century. One of the main features of the town is the carefully preserved Medieval castle, which was a military fortress and a royal palace. Additionally, the Sé Catedral de Leiria is must-see. Originally built in 1545, it was damaged by an earthquake and reconstructed in the 18th century. The hubbub of the town can be found in Rodrigues Lobo Square, where locals and tourists alike stop for coffee, browse boutique shops, and get a sweet bite to eat. Plus, for a more modern taste of culture, there’s the annual Leiria Film Festival.
For a spot of nature, head to Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros, which is partly located in Leiria, partly located in the district of Santarém. It is home to rivers, rock formations, 18 species of bat and…dinosaur footprints!

While Praia da Concha (which translates as “seashell beach”) in Marinha Grande, is a small and cosy cove. You can also find plenty of lovely lakes that are worth a dip.
