Property for Sale in Burgau

Located in Western Algarve, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, Burgau is a former fishing village that is evolving into a resort town. During peak-season, Burgau is full of tourists but once they have made their way home, Burgau has a distinctly low-key feel. The better known resort of Praia da Luz is just ten minutes west, and Burgau could be seen as a great alternative, for those wanting somewhere a little less discovered. Plus, Burgau is a twenty-minute drive to the vibrant town of Lagos. A property for sale in Burgau could be your calming base, from which you can go and explore bouncier parts of the Algarve, should the mood take you.  

The main draw of a property for sale in Burgau is the Praia do Burgau. It is an impressive stretch – 350m to be precise – of golden sands. As the beaches are surrounded by steep white cliffs, you are sheltered from the full force of the wind. It is great for rock pooling and paddleboarding. The beach has been awarded a Blue Flag, recognising its cleanliness, safety and excellence – and, in the case of Praia do Burgau, its clay with medicinal properties. There are bars along the beach and the village is just a short walk away. The village itself is made up of cobbled streets, white-washed buildings, and possesses a relaxed atmosphere. Naturally, the seafood is delicious in Burgau, but if you or your loved ones prefer vegetarian or vegan food, you may want to look for property for sale in one of the more established resort towns.  

The Costa Vicentina Natural Park is 100km long, starting in Porto Covo in Alentjo and ending in Burgau. It is home to amazing fauna and flora, including twelve species which are unique to the world. It is a fantastic spot for birdwatching and hiking; see if you can spy otters, white storks and falcons.  

In Burgau, the weather is warm from May through to October. The temperature reaches its height in August, which has an average daily maximum of 30°C. Meanwhile, the coldest month is January, but even then, it has an average daily maximum of 16°C.  

The quickest way to Faro International Airport from Burgau is by car, which is just a smidge over an hour. The public transport routes are convoluted: a bus takes close to four hours, and the train takes the full four. This could be a plus: if you are looking for a property in the Algarve where you can truly switch off and unwind, there is something to be said for owning a home that is quite disconnected from public transport. Fortunately, budget-friendly flights from Faro to Europe are easily available.   

Property for sale in Burgau ranges from plots of land to sale to old homes to new builds. If you are willing to pull your sleeves up and get stuck into turning an old home into something spectacular, then a land plot for sale (or an old property) can be purchased for around €145,000. Moreover, if you are looking for a cute one-or-three-bedroom apartment that benefits from being just moments from the beach, then your budget should start at €300,000. The newer and flashier the build, the bigger the budget you’ll need. If you are after a traditional townhouse of three-bedrooms or more, then you can find one for €430,000 and up. This kind of property will often boast of its own swimming pool, outdoor space and a terrace or two. As Burgau undergoes this transition from old fishing village to resort town, there are numerous new build properties popping up, both in the form of modern beachfront apartments and fantastic family villas, for which you would need a budget of at least a million. Since Burgau is currently undergoing this transformation, it has a contrast of old and new properties and less properties that fall somewhere in between.
