Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, is the capital of Tuscany and can be found in Central Italy. If you don’t want to run out of things to see and do, then a property for sale in Florence will suit you well. Florence is so famous for its amazing art and architecture; the historic centre was declared a UNSECO World Heritage site.
The historic centre is partially enclosed by what remains of its 14th century walls. With its first stone being laid in 1296, but not completed until the mid-14th century, the Santa Maria del Fiore has stood tall and dominant in the city for centuries. It remains one of the largest churches in the world. In addition, the Palazzo Vecchio tells of Florence’s history with its combination of Roman ruins, Medieval fortress and Renaissance art.
Florence is home to the Uffizi gallery, one of the greatest collections of Western art. Spanning from the Middle Ages to the present day, you’ll find the works of some of the most celebrated artists in history: Botticelli, Correggio, Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Caravaggio. Another must-see is the Palazzo Pitti, a palace that has since been converted into a collection of five museums.
If you’re interested in science, you can see Galileo’s telescope at the Galileo Museo. As well as this, you can climb hundreds of steps up Giotto’s Bell Tower, for some of the greatest views of the city. Meanwhile, for both great views and a touch of greenery, head to the Boboli Gardens or the Bardini Gardens.
The Arno River runs through Florence. The north side is abundant with museums, galleries and grand cathedrals. While the south side offers a quieter atmosphere, made up of viewpoints, gardens and villas. Along Arno River, you’ll find the bridge Ponte Vecchio, which is lined with interesting shops, many of them selling jewellery.
Moreover, Florence’s international airport is situated 8km outside of the city centre, it is the second busiest airport in Tuscany, after Pisa international airport. A direct flight from London to Florence takes two hours and ten minutes and runs throughout the year.
Multiple Tuscan beaches can be reached via car or train in one or two hours from Florence. For as family getaway, the historic seaside resort of Viareggio is in the province of Lucca. While Forte dei Marmi with its designer shops and gourmet restaurants has a more VIP-feel.
Florence experiences warm weather from April through to October. The hottest months are July and August with an average daily maximum of 32 degrees. Furthermore, the summer season is when the city can get quite packed with tourists. While October sees highs of 20 degrees, this falls to 16 in November, which is also the wettest time of year. The coldest month is January with an average daily maximum of 11 degrees.
When it comes to property for sale in Florence, the following neighbourhoods are favoured among overseas buyers: San Frediano, San Marco and the Duomo. It is possible to find a one-bedroom for under €100,000.
However, a budget closer to €200,000 is going to open up your options for a small one-to-two-bedroom property much more. There is a significant difference between what a budget of €500,000 can find you in the city centre and outside of it. For this price, in the city centre, you can secure a small apartment in a historic building with views of Florence’s most famous attractions.
