While it is the third-smallest region in Italy, Liguria is not to be dismissed as a dreamy location to search for an overseas home. Like Venice, Genoa was once the epicentre of a maritime republic. Today, the Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli in Genoa’s historic centre is a UNSECO World Heritage site. You can walk its Medieval streets, tour its galleries, and enjoy lunch overlooking the harbour. When you’re seeking a breather from the bustle of the city, the fishing village of Boccadasse is a small inlet pebble beach with multi-coloured houses, perfect for watching the sunset with an ice cream. Southeast of Genoa, the once small fishing village of Portofino has evolved to have a yacht-filled harbour, designer shops and exclusive hotels. Although Portofino has only about 500 permanent residents, the population swells in the holiday season.
Close by, but with less footfall and a more relaxed atmospheres, you’ll find Santa Margherita and then Camogli. Plus, hikers will enjoy the access to Punta Chiappa, which enchanted the British poet, Lord Byron.

Liguria is famous for Cinque Terre, a collection of five coastal villages, connected by hiking trails. A World Heritage site, each village in the Cinque Terre is extremely photogenic, with their pastel-coloured homes perched on the rocks overlooking the sea.
While Liguria is served well by trains and ferries, the roads are narrow, and driving can be difficult. Notably, you cannot drive in the historical centres of the Cinque Terre.
Liguria boasts of 300 days of sunshine a year. It has a mild climate and not too much rain, year-round. July and August both see an average daily maximum temperature of 29°C and up to twelve hours of sunshine a day. Moreover, the temperature sits agreeably between the late teens and early twenties from April to October. The temperature is cooler from November to March with the coldest month of all being January with highs of 11 degrees.
