On the hunt for a seaside home in Portugal? Discover where to buy and 8 handpicked homes.

In the Portugal Reader Survey 2024, we asked: what type of property are you looking for? The top pick was seaside home with 51.71% of answerers selecting it. If you’re interested, it was followed by house or cottage in the countryside (46.98%). As you might except, the top choice for location were the Algarve and The Silver Coast. Whether you’re seeking to sun on the fine golden sands of the Algarve or catch the Atlantic’s greatest waves along the Silver Coast, we’ve got you covered. We have handpicked eight beautiful seaside homes in Portugal.

Homes in the western Algarve

In our survey, over 10% of people said that they wanted a home in the western Algarve. Life moves at a softer pace here, but great improvements to the infrastructure in the last decade have made it more up-and-coming. The city, Lagos, is the best spot for bustle, with a characterful Old Town and superb surfing beach, Meia Praia.

Where else to hunt for seaside homes…

If neither the Algarve or the Silver Coast quite tickles your fancy, you may want to look:

  • The Alentejo Coast, located between the Tróia Peninsula and the western Algarve, here you’ll find long sandy beaches and hidden coves. It is not nearly as developed as the Algarve but can be a little trickier to get to.
  • Madeira, a lush island off the north coast of north Africa with year-round spring-like weather, it has lovely beaches. Discover properties for sale there.
  • Azores, a group of islands set in the middle of the Atlantic, the climate is sub-tropical, the wine delicious (thanks to the volcanos) and the lifestyle truly unique.
