Wide sandy beach, white houses, cloudy sky with seagulls, Carvoeiro, Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve is the absolute favourite location of international buyers looking for a home in Portugal. While all of the Algarve is beautiful, we’ve taken a dive into the unique characters of the western, eastern and central regions. Plus, a look at properties for sale in each one.

In our Reader Survey 2024, we asked readers what their top choice in location for a Portuguese property would be. In 2023, idealista reports that almost 30% of house buyers with tax residence outside of Portugal bought in the Algarve, more than anywhere else. So, needless to say, we were expecting the Algarve to be the top location for our readers. The Algarve is roughly 40% larger than Cornwall in the UK, so we asked our readers to pick their preference out of the western, eastern and central Algarve. Turns out, our readers want to buy in all three locations almost an equal amount: 10.40% of our readers chose the western Algarve, 9.33% picked the central Algarve, and 9.60% for the eastern Algarve. So, from property prices to lifestyle, we’ve delved into what makes each of these areas distinct, with some properties to rouse interest too.

Western Algarve

The western Algarve won over slightly more hearts than the other areas in the Algarve. Life runs a little more softly here, with quieter resorts, rugged cliffs, and a stunning coastline made up of golden sand beaches. It is also superb options for golfers, such as Boavista Golf and Spa on the outskirts of Lagos and the 18-hole championship course at Penina Hotel and Gold Resort.

Lagos is the soul of the western Algarve. It is a historic walled city with white-washed buildings, cobbled streets, boutique shops and cafes. It also has a lively marina that can dock close to 500 yachts. At five kilometres, the Meia Praia beach is one of the longest in the Algarve, it brims with activity and energy. While Praia da Dona Ana beach is incredibly picturesque.
