Buying a property overseas can be daunting, but for Marylyn, who purchased an apartment in Cyprus in 2018, the process was utterly seamless. She effortlessly navigated the buying process electronically from the UK to secure her dream holiday home, which later became a more permanent residence.

Marylyn’s story is a testament to how easy and rewarding it can be to invest in a property abroad especially when you have the right experts on your side.

Why Cyprus?

For Marylyn, Cyprus was a natural choice. Her father was a Cypriot, and she has family and friends on the island. Initially, she bought an apartment in Peyia in May 2018 intending to use it as a holiday home. However, the Covid-19 pandemic delayed her plans, and she couldn’t use the property for 18 months. Despite this, her love for Cyprus and its lifestyle remained strong.

The best thing about living in Peyia, Paphos is “The sun, the weather and being so close to the sea. It’s a healthy lifestyle.”

Today, Marylyn enjoys a fulfilling life split between the UK and Cyprus. She said the best thing about living in Peyia, Paphos is “The sun, the weather and being so close to the sea. It’s a healthy lifestyle.”

The buying process

Marylyn describes the buying process as “possibly one of the easiest things I’ve ever done.” She managed everything electronically from the UK, likening the ease of it to buying a pair of shoes online.

After visiting Cyprus to view properties, she narrowed her property search down to western Cyprus, particularly Paphos, for its favourable climate and lifestyle. Although she hadn’t initially considered Peyia, Marylyn viewed an apartment and that was it – it was love at first sight.

The comprehensive service provided by the estate agent made the process even smoother. Marylyn was impressed by the aftersales service, which she found to be more comprehensive than buying a house in the UK.

Living the dream

When Marylyn’s husband got a job in Cyprus, the couple then transitioned their property from a holiday home to a primary residence. Marylyn highlighted that this certainly came with its surprises. She was amazed by the weather, especially the heat, having only visited Cyprus in autumn and spring before.

On her first night in the new apartment, she got a nasty mosquito bite. Luckily, upon speaking to her estate agent the following day, Marylyn was recommended to install fly screens and was put in touch with a company that installed them the very same day, showcasing the exceptional support she received from the agent, even after the sale was completed.

Marylyn confirmed that the after-sales service in Cyprus is much more comprehensive than the service you get in the UK.

The support she received from the estate agent went above and beyond. She recalls that after receiving the keys to her property, her estate agent helped her run errands and assisted with practical matters, such as visiting the electricity provider and shopping for new bed linens. This level of support made her transition to living in Cyprus much easier than it would’ve been if left to navigate a new country alone.

Expat support

Peyia has a huge expatriate community, perhaps the largest village in the PAphos region. There, you’ll find quaint restaurants, friendly pubs and a bustling town hall – all in the heart of the village. Marylyn shared that the expatriate community in Peyia have been ever so helpful and were really friendly and willing to help when she first moved to the village. She mentioned there are forums online that allowed her to ask questions to current residents and the support she received was nothing if not welcoming.

Advice for prospective buyers

Marylyn’s advice to anyone considering buying property in Cyprus is simple: “Just do it. If you have the money to do it, give it a try. It could really work for you.” Her positive experience highlights the benefits of taking the plunge and investing in a property abroad.

Marylyn’s story is a shining example of how easy and rewarding it can be to buy property in Cyprus with the right guidance. Her seamless journey from holiday home to dream residence is an inspiration for anyone looking to invest in the Cypriot property market.
