Furnishing your home in Greece is easier than you might think – whether you’re buying from local stores, online marketplaces or even shipping from abroad. From outdoor essentials to Greek-style decor, here’s how to source stylish, affordable furniture and appliances that suit your new Mediterranean lifestyle and budget.

Where to buy furniture for your home in Greece is something worth thinking about, even at the house viewing stage. Is the seller leaving any furniture? If not, will you ship furniture and appliances from home or simply buy everything when you get there? Either way, you will need to account for this in your budget and find out where you can buy things like beds, tables and electrical appliances.

The biggest furniture stores are around the capital city of Athens, but most big towns with a year-round population will have some. Alternatively, you can order furniture online and have it delivered.

In this article, we’ll answer some of the most frequently asked questions regarding furnishing a home in Greece.

Are there furniture stores on the Greek Islands?

When you go to a Greek island on holiday, you rarely see a furniture shop. It’s not something aimed at tourists in seaside resorts. But that’s not to say there aren’t any. They may just be located in a back street or in the suburbs. Head to the nearest sizeable town with plenty of permanent residents and you are sure to find a furniture shop nearby. Even big supermarkets sometimes have items of furniture, especially outdoor seating. If you want more choice, have a fun day out ferry hopping to the nearest big island town or take a trip to Athens.

One of the popular chains is Jysk, a Scandinavian store selling furniture for every room of the house. They have stores on the islands of Corfu, Zakynthos, Crete, Rhodes and Syros. You can also find them in Halkidiki, Chalkida, and across the Peloponnese and mainland Greece.

Another great furniture store is Entos, which specialises in furniture for the bedroom, living room, dining room and office. They have some interesting designs that will add something special to your Greek home. The big sofas look so comfy, you can just picture yourself having a siesta on them. In addition to stores around Athens, the Peloponnese and Thessaloniki, they have outlets on the islands of Rhodes, Kos and Crete.

Can I buy luxury furniture?

The islands that have a lot of luxury villas will also have shops selling high quality furniture. For that extra special piece of designer furniture, homeowners in Mykonos shop at Chora. While on Crete, they go to Marakaki. Even on Corfu, Zakynthos, Syros, Samos, Santorini, Kos, Rhodes, and Crete you can find luxury furniture at “Maison Concept & Objet”. As well as furniture, this store also sells smaller objects to decorate your Greek home in style.

Do they have Ikea in Greece?

There are six Ikea stores in Greece. They are located at Athens airport, Athens Kifissos, Thessaloniki, Thessalia (Old National Highway Larissa-Athens), Ioannina and Patras. There are also “New Generation” stores in Athens, Piraeus and Alexandroupli. Plus, they have pick up and order points in Rhodes, Chania, Heraklion and Kalamata.

Can I use Amazon in Greece?

Although there isn’t an Amazon-Greece, you can order from Amazon.de, as it is within the EU and can deliver to Greece. However, most people use Skroutz, as it is the leading online marketplace in Greece and is based in Athens. Similarly to Amazon, Skroutz has an extensive home and garden section, and you can select to view the website in English. If you register with Skroutz Plus and pay €25 a year, you can also get free or cheaper delivery rates on many items. They even have a useful page called “Renovation essential list” with links to furniture you might need for your new home in Greece.

Is it more expensive to buy furniture in Greece?

The cost of furniture in Greece is not that different to many other countries. What could add to the cost is getting the furniture to your Greek home. Logically, having furniture delivered from a shop in Greece should work out cheaper than from countries further away. However, you can also get some good delivery prices from online marketplaces like Amazon.de and big stores in other EU countries.

Big furniture stores like Ikea and online marketplaces such as Skroutz and Amazon.de make ordering easy. Once you enter your location, they clearly indicate delivery costs and whether they can deliver to your location. As Ikea and Amazon trade in many countries around the world, I used them and Skroutz to make a price comparison between four countries. I selected the UK, Canada and the USA to make the comparisons with. I then tried to find, as near as possible, the same furniture and appliances in each country. Although, in some cases the brand and dimensions may be slightly different due to regional variations.

How did Greece compare on price?

Out of the 16 items listed below, the prices were cheapest in Greece on ten of them. There were two areas that Greece did particularly well in. The first was home appliances, such as a fridge freezer, a kettle and a vacuum cleaner. The second was furniture for that important outdoor living space. Whether you choose to stretch out on a sun lounger by the pool or seek shade under a gazebo or umbrella, Greece has you covered.

With the superb weather we get in Greece, warm summer evenings are often spent out on the patio or balcony, which becomes an extra lounge and dining room. Therefore, comfortable and affordable outdoor seating is near the top of many furniture shopping lists. Even though Canada had the lowest prices for beds and sofas, the prices in Greece were very close. Therefore, when you take into account the expense of shipping from abroad, it becomes more cost effective to purchase from Greek outlets.

How do I find furniture locally?

You can search furniture stores online in the area of Greece your home is located. However, the local man who makes beautiful wood furniture or the guy who regularly comes in a van from Athens with chairs won’t show up on any internet maps. I recommend asking a local person where they buy their furniture from. Also, join an expat Facebook group, as sometimes they advertise secondhand furniture for sale. You could also ask them for shop recommendations. They may know of markets selling antiques and new furniture. We were lucky – the man we asked had a truck and was going to Athens. Thankfully, he offered to take my husband with him to look at lights and mattresses.

On another occasion, we saw some wooden chairs stacked outside a restaurant. They were the traditional Greek ones, painted blue with a rush seat. When we asked about them, we discovered that the owner was getting new tables and chairs and was happy to sell us some of the old ones. They were just what we needed to add that touch of Greek charm to our courtyard. If you would like some new ones, there is a Greek company that sells and ships them all over Greece, called Artline. Currently, they cost from €35 each on their website.

How do I add Greek character to a room?

You may want to add some pieces of furniture and decorative items that bring Greece right into your home. It’s tempting to kit the whole place out with furniture from Ikea. But, if you want to get up in the morning and immediately feel like you are in Greece, introducing some typically Greek elements into a room can make a real difference.

The most enjoyable way to do this is to take a stroll around the villages. Here, you can search out the local craftspeople that create beautiful pieces of pottery, art, furniture, fabrics, sculptures, baskets and lace etc. Another option is to browse the antique markets for interesting items with a bit of history.

Will bedding in Greece fit my bed?

If you ship your old bed to Greece and then find you need to buy bedding or a new mattress, you should be aware that bed measurements in one country aren’t necessarily the same as in another. As you can see from the comparison list, not all kings are the same. Therefore, I would recommend checking the dimensions of your bed and pillows before heading to a Greek bedding shop. It’s mainly fitted sheets and the shape of pillowcases that can be a bit tricky. Therefore, I find it easier to buy flat sheets. If you need to replace a mattress, you might have the same issue. But there are companies in Greece that make custom made mattresses.

Where can I buy a sofa?

A good selection of sofas can be found at Factory Sofa and SofaStore in Athens. But there are many more general furniture stores that stock sofas. The Ektorp three-seater sofa in Ikea Greece costs €419.00, which is a reasonable price compared to those in some other countries. For a big choice of sofas online, also look on Skroutz. They have over 13,000 sofas, with a three-seater costing from €150.

Where can I buy a cheap kitchen?

When buying a property in Greece, it’s nice to have a new kitchen installed. If you have a holiday apartment, you won’t be cooking much in the heat of summer. Therefore, a small kitchen from Ikea or Skroutz will probably do the job. On Skroutz, the most basic kitchen cupboard set with a double wall cupboard and base cupboards costs from €129.

Where can I buy everything in one place?

Praktiker is Greece’s number one shop to get all the items on your DIY, furniture and appliances list. They do everything from kitchens and bathrooms to appliances and furniture. At time of looking, they even had a solar water heater on offer for just €649. With all the sun we get in Greece, one of these works great most days of the year and is well worth putting on your shopping list. Conveniently, Praktiker has 17 stores across Greece, in places like Athens, Ioannina, Corfu, Rhodes, Heraklion on Crete, and Kalamata and Patras in the Peloponnese.

Will my electrical appliances work in Greece?

Greece’s standard voltage is 230V at 50Hz, which is in line with most European countries. However, American appliances might need a convertor, because of frequency and voltage differences. While modern devices like phones and laptops should work fine as they are dual voltage (100-240V), single voltage appliances may need a convertor or transformer.

Greece uses the Type C European plug, which has two round pins. For electrical appliances that consume a lot of electricity, they use Type F plug, which has two round pins and earth clips. If your appliance doesn’t fit the Greek sockets, you could use a travel adapter or change the plug. As the energy ratings have improved significantly in recent years, you may be better off buying new appliances in Greece. Stores like Praktiker have a big range of washing machines, fridge/freezers, dishwashers and cookers etc.

Is it expensive to have furniture delivered in Greece?

When ordering online, you need to check the delivery cost of each item carefully, as they will vary depending on who the seller is. Undoubtably, the large dimensions and weight of some pieces of furniture and household appliances will increase the delivery charge. This is why flat pack furniture and foam mattresses that roll up, generally work out cheaper.

On websites that represent businesses, sellers will be competing for a good position on the page. Sometimes the cheapest item listed, turns out to have the highest delivery charges. For example, I saw a table with two bench seats on Amazon.de for €122 with “FREE delivery to Greece” (dispatched from Amazon, sold by a private seller). Next to it was a very similar set for €80, but the delivery was €162 (dispatched and sold by Amazon).

If you buy items that are coming from within Greece, or at least from within the EU, the delivery charge shouldn’t be too expensive. I saw a wooden table with four chairs that cost €189 on Skroutz, with a €25 shipping charge to Greece.  A similar set on Amazon.de cost €222 and had a €9.99 delivery charge. There’s no obvious way of calculating what the delivery might be, therefore you will need to enter your property location and read the delivery options carefully for each item.
